Robert’s Off 10: Mounds View, MN

July 17, 2012

When there’s a “sports bar” on every goddamn block in the Twin Cities metro area, there’s bound to be some that don’t make it. Roberts Off 10 in Mounds View has been here for as long as I can remember and I had no idea it closed until I was driving on Highway 10 one evening. I happened to have my camera with me, so I pulled over and took some photos.

No windows? This place looks like a tomb

I never went here and don’t know much about Roberts off 10, other than it was one of those joints that was heavily advertised on the radio as a place where guys could grind on chicks, get hammered drunk and wake up in the dumpster. I remember hearing it advertised on KDWB, B96 and K102, so you could expect to hear a range of music here, depending on what night of the week it was.  So depending on what day of the week you visited, you could hear an Eminem jam or Shania Twain’s latest hit or perhaps the club mix of “My Heart Will Go On.” (Yes, there is a club mix of this song. I have it on my iPod. How sad is that?).

This place looks more like a fortress than a friendly neighborhood sports bar

It was also a sports bar, so I’m guessing a lot of dudes gathered here during Vikings season to drink beer, yell at the TV sets and flirt with the lady workin’ the pull tab cage.

I couldn’t find any information on when it closed and there really isn’t much to say about this place. The building itself isn’t very interesting — it looks like an abandoned warehouse. It doesn’t have any windows (how odd…). I can only imagine how rank this place smelled inside, pre-smoking ban. I hope their ventilation system was good, otherwise you’d probably clam bake in there with all the smoke. This sign was the best part of my visit:

The party NEVER stops…

Any information or memories you want to share? Was this place *always* Roberts off 10 or was it something else? Anyone know when it closed?

I think it used to be one of those feedbag buffet places (with popovers) back in the 70s or 80s.

It used to be the Anchor Inn in the 70′s–a seafood joint. They were known for their frog legs! After it closed, it went through a few incarnations as various bars, if I remember right. I think it became Roberts around the end of the 80′s (for sure by 1991, which was the first and only time I visited Roberts). I don’t remember it ever being a buffet…

This place was the epitome of trailer trash back in the 80′s. I remember driving by one night and on their marquee it said, “Laidies Night Tonight! 3-4-1′s until close”. If that doesn’t scream “classy”, I don’t know what does.
