Hell yes I remember Winchell’s donuts! I grew up around 63rd & Boone in BP and went to Junior High near Winnetka & Bass Lake Rd in No Hope. I used to frequent the Winchell’s on Bass Lake Road, as it was near my school and several of my friends’ houses.

I had a friend who, whenever a female would give him attitude, ask her “can I get a Bear Claw with that?” The inside joke was that instead of calling her a wench (which evolved into a “wenchell”) he’d throw out the bear claw line because they sold them at “Wenchell’s” donuts.

Yeah, kinda lame, but somebody brought up Winchell’s and that’s my primary memory of them…

My first Krispy Kreme was in Seattle. I wasn’t really that impressed. They’re excellent hot, but cold they’re no different from any other donut.

That said, I wish there were still donut shops in the Twin Cities. I remember Winchell’s, which became BoSa before disappearing altogether. Mister and Dunkin’ Donuts were here too. Dunkin’ has such good coffee… kind of like McDonald’s… both of which are better than the fancy $4 a cup stuff. The only reason I go to Dunn Bros. or Caribou is for the atmosphere (and Dunn’s for the computers)!

Anyone recall Winchells or Witchells Donuts? They were in MN, but back sometime in the Paleolithic Age.
Funny, I was wondering what that empty building was last night on the way to the Maple Grove Discount Theater to watch the cinematic equivalent of the Sydney Opera House, ‘Australia’, and turned right too early.

I wrote a post about American companies in Tokyo.
I mention both Krispy Kreme (they came here fairly recently) and Dunkin’ Donuts (they left Japan because their donuts don’t suit Japanese taste).

(Mister Donuts is by far the most popular donuts shop in Japan!)
